Golf 2.0 Initiative

Golf 2.0 is a golf industry-wide initiative, which has the involvement and financial resources from golf's key stakeholders, that aims to retain core golfers, re-engage those who have left the game, and create new players. It is an initiative to recapture the millions that have walked away from the game, and, to grow participation in the sport to 50 million golfers by 2020. Jack Nicklaus' endorsement of Golf 2.0, "I love the game of golf and believe we have a unique opportunity right now to grow our sport. There are few bigger traditionalists than me, but I realize we need to start thinking out of the box. With so many sports and activities fighting for the time and attention of families, we need to think of ways to make our game more attactive and thus more inviting, especially to children and young adults."

The Surprising Numbers

In 2000-01 it was estimated that the number of golfers in the US was 29.8 million. In 2013, the estimated number of golfers was down to 24.1 million. The biggest lost of golfers was in the 18 - 34 age group, where nearly 200,000 golfers found something else to do instead of golfing. Over the past 12 years, statistics show that almost 6 million golfers have walked away from the game. And the numbers are very similar when it comes to golf course closures. According to NGF, 2006 was the first year since 1946 that more courses closed than opened. Since then, there has been a cumulative net loss of 643 courses. In 2013 alone, 157 courses closed their doors, versus only 14 new courses celebrating their grand opening. Of the 157 courses that closed, 151 were public-access facilities; just the kind that would appeal to those the game needs the most: newcomers, casual golfers, cost-conscious golfers, women, and juniors. A total of 144 of the public-access facilities were daily fee and 7 were municipal operations.

PNTee Supports Golf 2.0 Initiative

PNTee supports the Golf 2.0 Initiative by introducing the game and business of golf starting at middle school grade levels. PNTee will provide information, mentors, and resources through structured programs starting with middle school participants. These resources will continue to be available as our middle school participants progress through the high school and college grade levels.

PNTee Supports Diversity in Golf

It will take new and returning golfers from all communities to grow the participation in golf. If you take a look at the total population across the US, in 2012, minorities consituted 37% of the total population. PNTee is an all inclusive organization; however, we recognize the need to get more participants from under-represented communities involved in the play and business of golf. There will be concentrated efforts by PNTee to focus on young golfers and athletes in these communities.

A brief list of planned activities are as follows:

  • Introduce golf to middle school students and their parents in under-represented communities.
  • Work with high schools in under-represented communities to introduce golf to top athletes in other sports.
  • Work with Historically Black Colleges and Unversities (HBCUs) to create or support golf programs.
  • University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is the only HBCU with an accredited PGA Golf Management Program. PNTee will become a funnel organization to UMES for all under-represented participants that want to pursue a degree in a PGA Golf Management Program.
